A 31-year-old biker, who was caught by the police during nakabandi in the wee hours of New Year, set his brand new motorcycle on fire, damaging five other bikes parked nearby.

The incident took place on Friday at 1:00 am outside Thane station area, when the police stopped the accused while he was heading to Naupada in inebriated state.

The accused has been identified as Ashok Rajendra Ovel, who is working as a driver with a private firm and a resident of Thane’s Kranti Nagar area.

Speaking to a leading daily, Traffic Police Inspector Ashok Sonde said, “The bike which Ovel was driving had no number plate and suspecting he was drunk, we stopped him. Breath analysis test found that he was under heavy influence of alcohol.”

The police further added that while they were busy preparing a case of drink driving against the Ovel, he pulled bike’s petrol pipe and set it on fire.

According to reports, the cost of Ovel’s bike was near Rs 85,000.

“Though no person was injured in the incident, five other bikes were damaged,” said police.

Ovel has been booked under section 435 of IPC and a case has been registered at Naupada police station.
