As many as 775 cases of drunken driving were recorded by Thane traffic police on New Year’s eve, a jump of 21.77 % over last year’s number of 620.
Despite many awareness drives launched by the traffic police, the figures were quite high for Thane this year.
However, fortunately not a single fatal accident was recorded overnight.
All the 775 motorists were booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The punishment for drink and drive is either a penalty of up to Rs 2,000 or six months imprisonment or both.
Around 500 men in uniform were present at various checkpoint from 4 pm on Thursday to 5.30 am today.
Though there has been an increase in the number of offenders this year, the police would continue to increase awareness among people about road safety.
In Mumbai, police have collected fines of over Rs 5 lakh from persons for violating traffic rules during New Year eve revelry.
